Jonathan Samuel Carroll (conceived January 26, 1949) is an American fiction essayist basically known for books that might be named enchantment authenticity, slipstream or contemporary dream. He has lived in Austria since the 1970s.
Life and work :
Carroll was conceived in New York City to Sidney Carroll, a film essayist whose credits incorporated The Hustler, and June Carroll (née Sillman), an on-screen character and lyricist who showed up in various Broadway shows and two movies. He is the stepbrother of author Steve Reich and nephew of Broadway maker Leonard Sillman. His folks were Jewish, however Carroll was brought up in the Christian Science religion. A self-portrayed "pained young person," he completed essential training at the Loomis School in Connecticut and graduated with distinction from Rutgers University in 1971, wedding craftsman Beverly Schreiner around the same time. He moved to Vienna, Austria a couple of years after the fact and started showing writing at the American International School, and has made his home in Austria from that point onward.
His first novel, The Land of Laughs (1980), is demonstrative of his general style and topic. Told through practical first individual portrayal, the novel concerns a youthful teacher, Thomas Abbey, looking into the life of a most loved youngsters' book writer of his childhood, which includes meeting the writer's girl in her and her late father's apparently untainted main residence of Galen, Missouri. Everything appears to be fine until the point that a pooch in Galen starts conversing with Abbey. The line progressively obscures between the dreamland made by Abbey's examination subject and the life of the general population in Galen, while the peruser starts to ponder exactly how much trust can be put in this storyteller. Resulting books would develop these topics, however regularly contain inconsistent storytellers in reality as we know it where enchantment is seen as normal. (One pundit asserted in The Times that "on the off chance that he were a Latin American author with a three-section name, his books would be portrayed as mystical pragmatist".)
Honors :
Carroll's short story, "Companion's Best Man", won the World Fantasy Award. His novel, Outside the Dog Museum won the British Fantasy Award and his gathering of short stories won the Bram Stoker Award. The short story "Oh goodness City" won the French Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire. His short story "Home on the Rain" was picked as extraordinary compared to other stories of the year by the Pushcart Prize advisory group. Carroll has been a sprinter up for other World Fantasy Awards, the Hugo, and British Fantasy Awards.
